Semester/Master project
Contact: Daniel Flórez-Orrego, daniel.florezorrego@epfl.ch
Semester/Master project in collaboration with CIMO Compagnie industrielle de Monthey SA
Objectives
As part of CIMO’s Energy and Decarbonization strategy the objective is to map the main sources of CO2 from CIMO, identify appropriate capture technologies and strategies for using captured CO2, develop a model to systematically rank and compare promising CCS options, evaluate these options developed in the light of techno-economic, energy and environmental impact performance indicators.
Profile
- Interest in process engineering, energy conversion systems and energy integration methods.
- Experience in programming languages is desirable.
- Understanding of industrial energy installations, affinity with new technologies
- Ability to act as an active and communicative actor, and ability to summarize and present results
Project plan
The study includes:
- Mapping of point sources of CO2 from CIMO special waste treatment facilities and heat provision facilities, adapted to carbon capture (CDC).
- Identification of appropriate capture technologies and strategies for using captured CO2 at the Monthey chemical site.
- Development of a model to systematically identify promising CCS options at the Monthey chemical site and optimize them.
- Evaluation of the options developed in terms of techno-economic, energy and environmental impact performance, taking into account the evolution of the energy market and the Monthey chemical site, deduction of recommendations for action.
- In parallel with this mission, you will also have the opportunity to participate in in-depth studies aimed at strengthening the company’s environmental sustainability (independence from fossil fuels, climate neutrality, etc.)
Observation
The project is in collaboration with CIMO Compagnie industrielle de Monthey SA. Opportunity to perform an internship with thesis. Economic support available if defined with the supervisors and the industrial partner.
