Semester/Master project

Objectives

The goal is to study decarbonization strategies for the fertilizers industry, considering seasonal energy and mass storage, electrolysis systems and district heating integration.

Profile

  • Interest in renewable energy conversion systems and energy integration methods.
  • Knowledge on energy systems engineering, waste heat recovery and techno-economic analysis.
  • Some knowledge on Python and Lua is desirable.

Project plan

The study includes:

  1. Understanding the energy processes of the existing models for fertilizers production (Reforming, Electroysis, Air separation, Haber Bosch, Methanation, Carbon capture, PV panels, Cogeneration systems, Steam networks)
  2. Estimate waste heat recovery potential in existing models (use of Pinch Analysis)
  3. Integration of renewable energy and seasonal storage systems in the fertilizers industry
  4. Opportunity to publish conference or journal papers of the results derived from the study
  5. Possibility of integrating the IPESE team as master valorization in SFOE or IETS projects after completion and based on performance.

Observation

The project is a continuation of the Fertilizers case study of the AIDRES database
