Lander Cortvriendt, visiting master student at IPESE EPFL, has graduated magna cum laude from KU Leuven as a Master of Chemical Engineering with a thesis entitled “Data-Driven Systematic Methodology for the Prediction of Optimal Heat Pump Temperature Levels and Refrigerants in Process Integration”.

His thesis involved developing models to identify patterns in thermal composite curves from industrial processes. These patterns influence the selection of heat pump structures, optimizing temperature levels and refrigerant choices to streamline decision-making.

The Master’s thesis project in collaboration with the Industrial Process and Energy Systems Engineering group at EPFL was supervised by Dr. Daniel Florez-Orrego (EPFL), Prof. Dominik Bongartz (KU Leuven) and Prof. Francois Marechal Maréchal (EPFL).

For this work, Lander was honored with the IAR-CIT Master’s thesis prize for best thesis at the Department of Chemical Engineering - KU Leuven.

Lander presented his dissertation results at ECOS2024 - 37th International Conference on Efficiency, Cost, Optimization, Simulation & Environment in Rhodes, Greece.

Lander will be joining Eastman as a Process & Project Engineer.

According to Lander, his exchange experience not only enriched him personally, but also opened many professional doors. Also, presenting his results at a scientific event provided wide networking opportunities with researchers and other professionals.
